So you’ve seen the videos. Scrolling past people gracefully hanging from silks or spinning in hoops. Maybe a friend invited you to a show, and now you’re wondering...
“Could I actually do that?”
Short answer: yes. You can.
At InFlyte Entertainment in Hudson, MA, many of our most passionate aerialists started with zero experience — no dance background, no gymnastics, and definitely no clue how to tie a footlock. But they had curiosity, courage, and a willingness to try something new.
If you’re thinking about starting aerial arts, this blog is for you. Let’s break down what your journey might look like — from your first steps into the studio, to your first spin in the air, all the way to your first performance (yes, really!).
You Don’t Need to Be Strong or Flexible to Start
Let’s bust the biggest myth right away:
You do not need to “get in shape” before trying aerial.
We hear it all the time — people assume they have to hit the gym for months before they can even attempt aerial silks or lyra. But here’s the thing: you get strong by doing aerial. Not the other way around.
At InFlyte, our beginner classes are designed for people who’ve never touched an apparatus before. We start with foundational skills, break things down in approachable steps, and build your strength naturally over time.
You’ll be amazed how quickly your body adapts.
What to Expect in Your First Class
Walking into a new studio can feel intimidating, especially when there are ropes hanging from the ceiling. But don’t worry — InFlyte is known for being one of the most welcoming, inclusive, and encouraging spaces you’ll find.
Here’s what your first class might look like:
1. Warm Welcome
Your instructor will greet you, help you settle in, and introduce you to the class. You’ll meet other students — many of whom may be beginners too.
2. Ground Warm-Up
We start with a light, dynamic warm-up to get your muscles moving and your body prepped for aerial work.
3. Apparatus Introduction
Depending on the class (silks, sling, or hoop), your instructor will show you basic grips, mounts, and body positioning — all with plenty of hands-on guidance.
4. Beginner Skills
You’ll start with low-to-the-ground skills like footlocks, hangs, and spins. You won’t be doing drops or flips (yet!) — we build confidence one step at a time.
5. Cool Down & High-Fives
We always end with a gentle stretch and group encouragement. You’ll leave feeling empowered, even if you surprised yourself.
What to Wear (and What to Bring)
You don’t need fancy gear — just clothes that let you move and cover your skin.
Leggings or tight joggers (no shorts — fabric can be grippy!)
Fitted top that won’t ride up when you go upside-down
Water bottle
Optional: grip aids or long sleeves if you're sensitive to friction
We work barefoot and without jewelry (for safety and fabric protection). If you’re not sure what to wear, just ask — we’ve got you covered!
Progress Looks Different for Everyone
Here’s a secret: nobody gets it all in one class. In fact, that’s part of the fun.
Aerial arts are a journey of growth, not perfection. You’ll celebrate little wins — your first climb, your first clean inversion, your first combo that flows. And along the way, you’ll build:
Functional strength
Flexibility and mobility
Body awareness
Resilience and confidence
Every week, you’ll see changes — not just in what you can do, but in how you feel.
Your First Performance (Yes, You Can!)
One of the most exciting parts of joining InFlyte is that every student — even beginners — has the chance to perform if they choose to.
Our showcases and student performances aren’t about perfection — they’re about celebrating progress, creativity, and personal growth.
Performing gives you:
A tangible goal to work toward
A chance to choreograph your own piece (with support!)
A safe, encouraging audience to cheer you on
And there’s nothing like the feeling of applause after you’ve flown through the air telling your story.
You’re Not Alone — InFlyte is a Community
One of the most beautiful things about aerial is the bond it creates between students. When you struggle, others cheer you on. When you succeed, they celebrate with you.
InFlyte isn’t just a studio — it’s a home for creative souls who lift each other up, literally and figuratively. Whether you’re 8, 18, or 58, you’ll find people here who get it.
You’ll meet:
First-timers just like you
Instructors who remember their own day-one jitters
Long-time students who will high-five you after class
And maybe even future collaborators and friends
Ready to Take Flight?
If your heart’s been whispering, “Maybe I could try that,” listen to it.
Aerial arts at InFlyte Entertainment are about exploration, expression, and taking that first small leap — which, with the right support, can turn into a giant soar.
